Club Career
Beckham started playing for Manchester United in 1994 at the age of 19 in the league with Port Vale. He was then sent out on loan to Preston North End for the rest of the season and scored 2 goals in 5 games, one of which was a superb corner kick.
On his return to Manchester United, Beckham quickly rose through the ranks and established himself in the first team. The 1995-96 season saw him lead his side to victory in both the FA Cup and the Premier League.
On the first day of the next season’s league, Beckham scored a stunning goal from the halfway line against Wimbledon that made him a household name and launched him on an unprecedented rise. United retained the title that season and Beckham was named PFA Player of the Year.
In the 1998-1999 season, Beckham helped them win the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup, and Beckham played a key role in each of them. United won the league in the following two seasons, becoming only the fourth club to achieve the feat.
Beckham’s international presence is no small feat as he has worked wonders for United. After a disappointing 1998 World Cup, Beckham emerged as a national hero in 2001 when he scored his World Cup trademark goal against Greece. In 2001, Beckham was chosen as the BBC Sport Personality of the Year and won the FIFA World Player of the Year award.
Beckham decided to leave Manchester United in 2003 as the second highest paid player to join La Liga giants Real Madrid. His controversial relationship with Madrid lasted four years, when Madrid won the league in the 2006-07 season and the Supercopa de España in 2003.
Beckham joined the LA Galaxy in 2007 in a $250 million contract. The high-profile purchase marks the beginning of Beckham’s public association with the club. During his five years at the club, Beckham won MLS Player of the Year twice and won the league title in 2011 and 2012.
2013 saw him move to PSG and go on to make 10 appearances without registering before announcing his retirement.
International Career
Beckham made his England debut in 1996 at the age of 21 in a World Cup qualifier against Moldova. He then participated in the qualifiers and represented the team at the 1998 World Cup.
At the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea, Beckham captained England and scored a crucial penalty kick in England’s 1-0 win over Argentina. However, England lost in the quarter-finals to finalists Brazil.
Beckham continued to represent England in the following years and was appointed captain of the team in 2006. He played in the 2006 World Cup in Germany, but suffered a metatarsal injury in the quarter-finals that ended his previous tournament.
He announced his retirement from international football in 2009, scoring 115 goals and scoring 17 for England.
Records
Beckham is the only player to have won league titles in four different countries: England, Spain, the United States and France.
He holds the record for the highest transfer fee paid for a player by an MLS team, with LA Galaxy paying $32.5 million to sign him from Real Madrid in 2007.
He is the first English player to score in three FIFA World Cup tournaments (1998, 2002, 2006).
